Jaguar Type 01: A luxury electric GT, built in Britain, revealed in New York

Jaguar unveiled the Type 01 in New York last night: a four-door electric grand tourer with 1,030 PS, 400 miles of EPA range, and 850-volt architecture. It is the first production car of Jaguar’s new era, and the car its 2024 brand manifesto was always going to be judged against.

Jaguar has spent two years in an unusually loud reinvention. The November 2024 brand teaser, pink runway, slim-serif typography, no car visible, divided the automotive world so sharply that the campaign became a cultural reference in its own right. Then came the Type 00 design study, all exuberant surfaces and pastel paint. Through most of 2025 and into this year, the car itself remained absent.
Last night in New York, Jaguar put the car on the floor. The Type 01, a luxury four-door GT, revealed to an invited audience at STORIED in West Chelsea, with digital takeovers of Times Square, DUMBO and the Lower East Side on the approach. Acclaimed British actor Florence Pugh was named as Jaguar’s inaugural brand ambassador. Singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro performed. Chef Roze Traoé cooked.
The party was carefully staged. The car, as it turns out, might be worth all of it.

What was actually unveiled

The Type 01 is a four-door grand tourer, electric only, built on an entirely new bespoke architecture Jaguar calls JEA (Jaguar Electric Architecture). It is the most powerful Jaguar road car ever made. Tri-motor layout. Up to 1,030 PS. 1,365 Nm. 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. The rolling-acceleration number is almost more impressive: 100 to 180 km/h in four seconds flat.

An 850-volt electrical architecture, paired with a 118 kWh usable battery, delivers an expected EPA range of up to 400 miles. On European WLTP cycles, that climbs to around 450 miles. 350 kW DC fast charging adds 200 miles of range in thirteen minutes. These are, in global EV terms, among the best current numbers from any manufacturer.

The proportions are what you notice first in the renders. A low roofline, a short front overhang, a long bonnet, an extended rear overhang, 23" wheels at each corner. Drag coefficient of 0.23, which Jaguar describes as the most aerodynamic road car it has ever built. Active vanes and a three-stage deployable spoiler handle the air at speed.

Inside, the Type 01 is split by a central spine into four individual spaces, each with its own volume, bracketed by brass-anodised aluminium rails that run the length of the cabin. The driver gets a single 24" OLED screen as the main display. A smaller seven-inch touchscreen between the front seats handles everyday controls. The audio system is called the Panoramic Soundbar, runs the full width of the dashboard, and is paired with Sensory Audio seats. Jaguar claims an automotive first.

Why the architecture matters

A dedicated electric platform is a serious investment, and Jaguar has gone further than most. More than 360 patent applications sit under this car. JEA is not shared with Land Rover or Range Rover. It exists only for Jaguar, and only for this new generation of Jaguars. The point is that the design would not have been possible on any other platform. The exuberant proportions, the four-door GT silhouette, the sheer length of the bonnet, the tri-motor layout with 50:50 weight distribution: these were the brief, and the architecture had to be built to deliver them.

That is a different approach to how most legacy manufacturers have handled their electric transitions. Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Porsche have each, in different ways, retrofitted or adapted existing platforms. Jaguar has, at considerable expense, built a new one. Whether that pays back commercially will take years to resolve. What is already clear is that it allows the Type 01 to look and drive differently from anything in its segment.

Built in Britain, deliberately

The second announcement, delivered in parallel with the New York reveal, is where production will happen. Final assembly at Solihull. Electric drive units and battery packs made in Wolverhampton. Pressed body panels in Halewood, Merseyside. The entire car, in other words, built in the UK.

The scale of the industrial commitment behind this is significant. JLR has already spent £11.5 billion of its planned £15 to 18 billion five-year investment programme announced in 2024. Nearly 9,000 Solihull employees have been retrained for electric vehicle production. Another 1,500 across JLR’s wider West Midlands operations have gone through the same transition. Production begins in 2027.
At a moment when much of the European automotive industry is quietly moving production east or into joint ventures with Chinese partners, Jaguar is doing the opposite. A new British-built electric luxury GT, from a company owned by Tata, is a slightly unusual configuration. But that is the configuration, and the political and industrial symbolism is being emphasised rather than hidden.

Why New York

North America is one of three strategic growth priorities Jaguar has set for itself under its House of Brands reset, alongside brand-led segment diversification and powertrain flexibility across the wider JLR portfolio. New York, for a British luxury reveal, is a specific choice. Fashion, music, film, finance, and the kind of client the Type 01 is being built for all gather here with less friction than almost any other city. STORIED in West Chelsea, zip code 10001, was the chosen venue. The zip code was, almost certainly, not an accident.

Florence Pugh as inaugural brand ambassador makes sense in that light. British, serious, culturally considered, not an obvious luxury-car face. She brings exactly the originality-of-casting that Jaguar has been reaching for since the 2024 reset, and does so without feeling performative.

The company called the reveal night “the biggest moment since the Jaguar name was born in 1935.” A bold claim. But probably true.

What this really is

The Type 01 lands as the first proof of concept for a Jaguar that no longer makes sense within its old competitive set. The XF has gone. The XJ has gone. The F-Type has gone. The I-Pace is winding down. What is emerging instead is a Jaguar that competes against the Porsche Taycan, the Lotus Emeya, the Bentley Flying Spur in its electric form, and, in a few years, against the next generation of long-wheelbase electric Mercedes and BMW flagships. The pricing will almost certainly reflect that company, and almost certainly land well into Bentley territory.

Jaguar has not confirmed a price. Orders open in early 2027. First client deliveries are expected in the second half of that year. Everything about how the Type 01 has been positioned, from its 1,030 PS to its 23" wheels to the New York premiere to the Florence Pugh ambassadorship, suggests Jaguar is pricing it to compete with the top of the luxury electric segment, not the middle.

The 2024 brand reset asked customers and critics to wait and see. Last night, the wait ended. On the evidence of what was shown, the car makes a stronger case than the manifesto ever did. Jaguar is back, as the materials put it. The reinvention finally has a car attached.
