Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid: The first electrified AMG E-Class in India

A 612-horsepower plug-in hybrid AMG sedan, priced from INR 1.45 crore, arrived in India today. So did Mercedes-Benz’s title sponsorship of the Indian Padel Tour. The two announcements point in the same direction.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ launched in India at an ex-showroom price of INR 1.45 crore for the Performance Edition and INR 1.48 crore for the Racing Edition. Alongside, Mercedes-Benz India also announced a multi-year title partnership with the Indian Padel Tour, becoming the naming sponsor of what has, in just eighteen months, become India’s largest competitive padel platform. Nineteen tournaments across ten cities. Five Grand Slams. A season that runs from Mumbai in August 2026 to Bengaluru in June 2027.

Performance, and its plug

The AMG E 53 Hybrid is Mercedes-Benz India’s first electrified AMG E-Class, and its second PHEV to arrive in a single quarter after the S 450e PHEV in June. That would be interesting on its own. What makes the E 53 more interesting is what it does with the electrified formula.

Under the bonnet: a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six petrol engine producing 449 hp on its own. Bolted to it, a 120 kW electric motor integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission. Together, the two power sources deliver a combined system output of 585 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, rising to 612 horsepower with the RACE START function. 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h, or 280 km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

The E 53’s 28.6 kWh battery (21.2 kWh usable) delivers more than 100 kilometres of pure electric range on WLTP, and will propel the car to 140 km/h on electricity alone. In practical terms, this is an AMG that will do the daily South Delhi-to-Cyber City commute in silence, and the weekend Buddh International Circuit lap in a coordinated snarl. It is the first AMG E-Class that asks its owner to choose neither.

Underneath, there is the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ variable all-wheel drive, and active rear-axle steering (2.5 degrees in either direction, depending on speed). There are seven driving modes, including two hybrid-specific ones (Electric and Battery Hold) that let the driver decide precisely when the battery does the work. The package incudes 20" AMG alloys, an illuminated AMG grille, a seventeen-speaker Burmester 4D system with Dolby Atmos, and AMG’s usual attention to the small details that separate a Mercedes-Benz sedan from an AMG one.

The games AMG owners play

Padel, in India, is younger than most of the cars that will play alongside it. The Indian Padel Tour launched in 2024. Eighteen months later, it has delivered thirty-seven tournaments across seven cities, engaged over five thousand players, and built a community of more than fifty thousand — making it, by some distance, the country’s largest competitive padel platform.

The demographic playing the sport is unusually consistent. Founders. Entrepreneurs. Senior partners in law and consulting. Professionals in their thirties and forties who have graduated from squash and tennis into something quicker, more collaborative, and slightly more sociable. It is, in near one-to-one correspondence, the sport that AMG owners are likely to play.

Mercedes-Benz India is aware of this, and have now bought the naming rights. The Mercedes-Benz Indian Padel Tour 2026–27 will run nineteen tournaments across ten cities from August through the following June. AMG customers, specifically, receive direct entry into the Grand Slam events, the tour’s flagship competitions. That last detail is not incidental. It is the entire strategic point.

Two announcements, one strategy

There was a time when a luxury brand in India launched a car, sold it through dealerships, and went home. Mercedes-Benz India has, over the last three years, been methodically dismantling that template. The Retail of the Future direct-to-customer model. The 140 Years. 140 Places world tour that spent this summer crossing the country. The powertrain-agnostic strategy that now offers ICE, PHEV and BEV in the same showroom. And now, a sport.

What the E 53 launch and the Padel Tour partnership have in common is not the customer, though the customer is real. It is the framing. Mercedes-Benz is no longer telling Indian buyers what to drive. It is telling them what their weekends should look like, what community they should belong to, and what should drive them.

Where performance meets sport

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid is a genuinely capable performance sedan, and one of the more interesting AMGs to reach India in years. But it is also, and this is the interesting bit, the first AMG that arrives in India with a sport bundled into it.

How Indian buyers respond to that framing will depend on how many of them have, in fact, already picked up a padel racquet. If the last eighteen months are any indication, many of them probably have.
