The third generation ŠKODA Superb has been launched at a price of INR 22.68 lacs onwards (ex-showroom Mumbai). The flagship from ŠKODA is a spacious and practical sedan, with a coupé-like silhouette, clear-cut edges and crystalline lights. And the good news is that the exclusive Laurin & Klement (L&K) moniker makes a comeback at the top of the range.
The ŠKODA Superb is powered by the new 1.8 TSI petrol/132kW (180PS) and the 2.0 TDI diesel/130kW (177PS) engines. It has a longer wheelbase and wider track that offers more space, maximum safety with 8 airbags, connectivity with SmartLink technology and is upto 20% more powerful and 30% more efficient than its predecessor.
The Superb has forever been admired for its elegant European design. And the design language of the new ŠKODA Superb demonstrates the familiar assured elegance as always. This one has crystalline elements run in detail through the exterior and interior in equal measures, and the precise workmanship and use of premium materials lend a superior edge. The bi-xenon lamps including AFS function and LED daytime running lights are sleek, offering significantly enhanced safety at night.
The completely redeveloped chassis with MacPherson front struts and multi-link rear axle offers good ride stability. Electronic Stability Control including Multi-Collision Brake, electronic Tyre Pressure Monitoring, 8 airbags, five three-point seat belts with fastening alerts, safety headrests, and XDS+, an enhanced function of the electronic differential lock, come as standard.
On the inside, drivers and passengers have 39mm more elbow room and more headroom. Rear legroom at 157mm is pretty good, and the 980mm headroom is more than in any other model in the segment. Elbow room in the rear has also increased by 69mm. The boot capacity is 625 litres, which is 30 litres more than in the outgoing model. The rear backrest has the provision of being folded down from the boot at the touch of a button, allowing storage flexibility. There is a rear-view camera as well, and the classic handbrake has been replaced with a Auto Held electromechanical parking brake.
A tablet holder in the rear, a tablet storage compartment in the Jumbo Box in the front, a USB port and 230 V socket in the rear, mechanical roller sun visors for the rear side, cargo fasteners that secure loose objects in the boot, a removable LED torch in the boot and misfuel protection are a few clever elements that find their way into the vehicle. There is also an optional virtual pedal for contactless opening of the boot lid.
The new Superb comes with three-zone air conditioning, an electronic panoramic glass roof, auxiliary heating, air-conditioned front seats, a wireless heated wind screen and heated washer jets. The rain/ light sensor wiper feature aids driving comfort, and an umbrella in each of the two front doors is a very posh touch.
The ŠKODA Superb L&K has a state-of-the-art infotainment system. SmartLink (includes MirrorLink/Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) allows connectivity with smartphones, and apps can be viewed and accessed on the 6.5″ touchscreen. The system offers Bluetooth, FM radio, RDS, JPEG viewer, a SD-card slot, an Aux-In and a USB socket, both of which are located in the central console. The Canton sound system with twelve speakers has a very impressive 610 W output.
