Ready for a road trip this summer? Here’s a list of the best road trip cars of 2012

03 June 2012: Indian summers can be dreadful. Hot, humid, dusty and bad roads to top it. But nothing beats the thrill of taking your car out for a road trip even at this time. The stretches of Bombay to Goa, Delhi to Manali, Delhi to Ranthambore, Bangalore to Calicut, Bangalore to Goa, Kolkata to Puri and Guwahati to Tawang offer some excellent experiences; each with its own unique landscape, flora, fauna and pit stops.

But which are the best cars for a road trip? Well, obviously not your everyday hatch or sedan for sure. Here is my collection of the best road trip cars in India. Off roader and SUVs have not been included as this is strictly a highway cruise list of convertibles; so get your buddies together and cruise down the highways and the winding hill roads. With the wind in your hair, life can’t get any better than this.
Porsche Boxster:

The Boxster is available in India for an ex showroom price of Rs.6.2 mln., which makes it one of the cheapest convertibles in India. Ironically, it is also one of the best road trip cars ever made. The Boxster S comes with a magnificent 3.4 flat 6 engine, churning 300 bhp which can propel the car from nought to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds and take it to a top speed of 275 km/h. The handling of the Porsche is brilliant, and it just loves winding mountain roads, which makes it a superb road trip car. The Boxster has space for two people along with their luggage, and though it’s rivals do offer four seats, the Porsche is still a favourite among the purists.

Mercedes Benz SL:

An all new SL was introduced in 2012, although the previous SL was a fairly capable grand tourer with a great choice of engines and superb comfort features. The new SL looks even better with an option of a V8 engine, and is a 2 seater with more refined interiors. India prices haven’t been announced as yet, but expect it to hover around the Rs.10 mln mark.

Jaguar XKR Convertible:

The Jag XKR convertible is a gorgeous car and in my opinion one of the best looking cars on sale today. The new engine has been tweaked to give it some extra grunt to match its looks and it is now available with the same 5 ltr super charged V8 engine from the hardtop, which is capable of pumping out a monstrous 507 bhp. The XKR goes from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. Brilliant for a car with 4 seats and space for a lot of luggage. The ex showroom price is around Rs.10 mln.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster:

The AMV8 roadster has always been a favourite because of its drop dead gorgeous looks and menacing exhaust note. The car is available with a 4.7 litre V8 engine which has a power output of a hefty 420 bhp. Enough to reach from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 290 km/h. At Rs.16 mln. ex showroom, the AMV8 Roadster is no doubt expensive. But drive it once and price will be the last thing on your mind.

BMW 6 Series Convertible:

The 6 Series has to be the best road trip car of 2012. It has everything you need on a long journey. Plenty of performance, lots of space and comfort, and quite a bit of style. The car does look magnificent, and comes with a V6 diesel engine, and is pretty fuel efficient too. It also has an optional 4.4 litre V8 engine, with an output of 407 bhp. Either ways a phenomenal car. Be prepared to shell out about Rs.9.5 mln ex showroom for this beauty.

So…what are you thinking? If you haven’t yet started packing your bags by now, do it pronto!

Nice blog..not many fans of convertibles in India though. really appreciate you putting it down.
Would prefer the SL class any day for a road trip. One of the most comfortable one. Followed by BMW 6 series.
Dont mind you missed Maserati GranCabrio, i myself wont prefer it for road trip.

    Cheers!! Keep them coming!!
